The Why

The Diversity “Problem”

It is no secret, the Design industry has a diversity problem. During my journey into UXR and even now, I quickly realized I was “The Only”. I asked myself why am I the only one who looked like me? Why didn’t I know about UXR earlier? Why don’t more people like me know about this 6-figure position?

The How

Why does the gap exist?

From my experience in HR and UXR, I’ve seen this problem stem from three areas.

  • Tech companies often focus on UX recruitment in engineering schools when many UX Research professionals are typically social science majors.

  • Candidates count themself out because they believe they need a degree in UX or a Masters / PhD, when many UXR come from all walks of life, thus emphasizing the misconceptions around minimum vs preferred qualifications.

  • Prospective candidates are not taught the strategies behind breaking into the industry. From resume critiques to effective interview techniques and even impactful research portfolio designs, there is a knowledge gap of how to properly prepare for UX Research interviews. As a result, talent misses the opportunity to effectively communicate their qualifications to hiring managers.
